What to do after your facial treatment

After getting a facial, your skin becomes temporarily very sensitive to touch, light, and chemicals. Without proper care, pollution, stress, and lack of good hygiene can waste the hard-earned money you’ve spent on your facial treatment. Luckily there are simple ways you can care for your skin and prolong its glowing appearance.

Don’t touch your face

We touch our face 16 times per hour on average. This will transfer dirt and bacteria from our hands onto our face. This may result in breakouts. Pay attention to where you put your hands or at least make sure that they’re clean.

Clean items that will touch your face

After your facial treatment, it will benefit you to wash your pillowcases and sheets to avoid pressing bacteria into your skin while you sleep. You should be washing your sheets and pillowcases at least once a week! Use freshly washed towels on your skin. You should dab your skin rather than wiping it. Dabbing will not irritate the skin, as it will be sensitive after the treatment.

Stay Hydrated

You have to load up on fluids to stay hydrated and make that glowing skin last longer. Your body needs adequate water intake every day to prevent dehydration and flush out toxins, which results in clearer, brighter complexion. The recommended water intake is 8 glasses of water every day, and even more, if you’re spending time in the sun, or exercising for extended periods of time.

Stay out of the sun

Following your facial treatment, you must make a conscious effort to stay out of the sun’s harmful rays. As you skin will be extra sensitive at this time. Exposing yourself to the sun will amplify its skin-damaging effects.

Skip washing your face

You should be advised not to wash your face for at least 24 hours. No washing with any facial soap, wash, or even water. Your face has just been deep cleaned, so you should avoid using any other chemicals or products on it. This can cause irritated skin.

Avoid makeup & clean your brushes

You should avoid wearing makeup at least 24-48 hours post your facial. Your pores have just endured heavy cleaning from your facial and are not recuperating, so putting on makeup will block the pores and heavily damage your skin. Your pores are open after your facial, so putting anything on it will go deep down into your pores and get trapped. Therefore causing breakouts and other skin problems in the future. When you do apply makeup again, use fresh sponges, and clean brushes.

After your 24-48 hours has gone past wash your face with a non-comedogenic, gentle and fragrance-free facial wash. Just for the first couple of days use washes and moisturizers like Cetaphil or Cerave. Use lukewarm water and your fingertips instead of a towel or exfoliating brush to prevent irritating the skin.

Facials should be thought of as skin maintenance in addition to your daily skin-care routine and we recommend getting a facial ideally once a month for the best results. If you can’t get in once per month, definitely try to get a facial once per season!
